Congressman Jay Dickey
In 2003, Congressman Jay Dickey presented his official papers and memorabilia to Ouachita
Baptist University. Today, these congressional papers are housed in OBU’s Riley-Hickingbotham
Library.
The collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, audiovisual
material, physical objects, letters, campaign materials, speeches, copies of legislation,
and maps from Dickey’s four terms in the United States House of Representatives (1993-2001).
Jay W. Dickey, Jr., was born December 14, 1939, in Pine Bluff (Jefferson County),
Arkansas. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1957, attended Hendrix College,
and earned a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
He practiced law and became Pine Bluff city attorney, serving from 1968-1970. Dickey
later served as a special justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court. He has been a business
owner and also a lecturer at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Dickey was elected as a Republican to the 103rd Congress and to the three succeeding
Congresses, serving from January 3, 1993, through January 3, 2001. His run for re-election
in 2000 was unsuccessful, as was another campaign in 2002.
